IOM publishes book on Migration for Development in Africa: the Health Dimension

mida_health_publication_cov.pngIOM Helsinki has published the book Migration for Development in the Horn of Africa - Health expertise from the Somali diaspora in Finland. 
Directed at a diverse audience of policymakers and practitioners, as well as the larger public interested in contemporary transnational issues,  this book captures the context in Finland and Somalia which has led to the very first MIDA (Migration for Development in Africa) project for Somalia.
Contributors from a variety of fields and backgrounds discuss, among others, the links between migration and development, the migration profile of Somalia and prevailing needs of the Somali health sector.

IOM and UNDP team up to bring back Somali Diaspora expertise

quests-mida_logo.jpgThe United Nations Development Programme Somalia (UNDP Somalia) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have launched a joint initiative to tap into key technical expertise among the Somali diaspora in a bid to help rebuild key governance foundations in parts of the country.

The Qualified Expatriate Somali Technical Support – Migration for Development in Africa (QUESTS-MIDA) project targets Somalis with professional expertise in policy and legislation, human resources management, and public financial management living in North America, the UK and the Nordic countries. Through the project, these experts will be engaged in short-term capacity-building placements in Somalia, for an average period of six months to provide on-the-job peer-to-peer training in their respective fields.

IOM Helsinki Afghan Helpline Information Meetings in Sweden 9-11 June 2009

swe_afg_brochure_eng_25feb09.jpgThe IOM Regional Office in Helsinki will from 9 to 11 June 2009 carry out a series of information meetings in Sweden on voluntary return and reintegration services available to voluntary returnees from Sweden to Afghanistan.  

The IOM Helsinki Afghan Helpline Operator visits Umeå on 9 June, Boden on 10 June, and Kiruna on 11 June. All interested members of the Afghan community in Sweden are invited to attend, no advance registration is needed. Meetings are held primarily in Dari and Pashto.

Search for Work and Workers at Heart of Migration in this Century, says IOM’s World Migration Report 2008

wmr08_thumb.jpgPeople are becoming increasingly mobile within and across borders to meet the social and economic challenges of globalization with the search for employment at the heart of most movement in the 21st century, says the World Migration Report (WMR) 2008 launched by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) on 2 December 2008.

The report, focusing on the theme of Managing Labour Mobility in the Evolving Global Economy, argues that demands for increased efficiency in production as a response to fierce global competition has meant that workers, independent of their geographical location, are increasingly living in an inter-connected world of work, resulting in greater labour mobility.
