Over 1000 voluntary returns from Finland this year

The number of assisted voluntary returns in August through IOM Finland was 74. The majority - or 56 returns - had Iraq as the destination country. Other destinations in August were Afghanistan and Russia, among others.

The total number of voluntary returnees during 2017 is now over 1000, 1034 to be exact. The number of countries migrants have returned to is 30.

Most of the returnees receive assistance for their reintegration into the society they are returning to, only 2 percent of  returnees this year have received no support.

Most, 74 percent, have received over 900 euros in cash support. Only 1 percent have chosen to take their assistance in-kind, meaning for instance training or help to set up a business.

IOM Finland's assistance to voluntary returnees from Finland is based on an agreement with the Finnish Immigration Service, Migri. Returnees can be granted either cash grants to help them reintegrate or are given in-kind-support like training.

According to IOM, voluntary return should always be the preferred means of return, as it is the most sustainable alternative in view of the reintegration of migrants.
